GERRY MULLIGAN/PACIFIC JAZZ 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
During the summer of 1952, Gerry Mulligan brought worldwide attention to the Los Angeles jazz scene with the creation of his "pianoless" Quartet. The group's success at The Haig opened doors for many west coast musicians and was also responsible for the birth of Pacific Jazz Records. In addition to the Quartet, Mulligan also wrote a number of compositions and arrangements for Stan Kenton's Orchestra as well as his own Tentette.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, Ken Poston, Director of The Los Angeles Jazz Institute is pleased to announce a very exclusive 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF GERRY MULLIGAN'S WEST COAST YEARS taking place July 31 at the Hermosa Playhouse , 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach with a special pre-concert dinner party at the legendary Lighthouse Cafe.
UNHEARD GERRY MULLIGAN ARRANGEMENTS FOR STAN KENTON

In addition to his work for Kenton, Mulligan also did some further explorations with a "Birth of the Cool" type ensemble which became The Gerry Mulligan Tentette. The opening set at The Playhouse will feature these Gerry Mulligan classics.

Private recording
During this concert, Gerry Mulligan played the world premiere of his composition "Entente". Rico Saccani was the conductor of the Filarmonica Veneta. The concert was shared between the symphonic part and the quartet one. "Please don't talk about me when I'm gone" is from the "Feeling Good" songbook. Gerry liked very much this song and played it regularly during his symphonic performances. Then in our recording we find four Mulligan's songs that Gerry Mulligan played very regularly at this period; among them the unissued theme on commercial CD "Around Sundown".
At last, "Entente" in a different form than the Houston concert in February 1987. For the first "Entente" performances in 1984, there was a long introduction by the philhamonic orchestra.

OTHER MUSICIANS PLAY GERRY MULLIGAN ORIGINALS :
1. Carol Fredette sings Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough
Brownstone 9903 "Everything I need"
I received this CD. This is an excellent one.
Carol Fredette sang with various combos. She features Bob Dorough on the song "Never in a single year", and Dave Frishberg on the excellent "I got to get me some ZZZ".
The exact composition of the combo which played the Jack Daney's arrangement of "Zoot Walks In" is : Carol Fredette (vcl), Steve Kuhn (p), Rufus Reid (b), Billy Drummond (d), Lew Soloff (tp), Wayne Andre (tb), Lee Konitz (as), Chris Potter (ts), Ronnie Cuber (bs).
This song starts by a duet between the tenor saxophonist Chris Potter and Carol Fredette, they played the theme slowly and bluesy. Following the lyrics, then the wind section plays with swing. The order of the soli is Chris Potter, Ronnie Cuber, Steve kuhn. At last Lew Soloff plays the theme.
This combo played the following songs "Never in a single year" and "Wouldn't You ?" which is based on "Woody 'n' you"
The review gives the following information : Lee Konitz, Ronnie Cuber (vocals) !! Is this true ? My answer is no
2.Sherri Roberts "Dreamsville" Brownstone 9811
I've got this CD. This new take of Dave Frishberg "Zoot Walks In" (4mn00s) is played on a higher tempo and swinger than the Carol Fredette version. Chris Potter takes the tenor solo. Sherry Roberts is assisted by pianist Mark Soskin, bassist Harvie Swartz, drummer Danny Gottlieb
3. East Down Septet "Channel Surfing", HEP CD 2069
I've got this CD directly from HEP records. This septet is a very nice one and is composed by two members of the 29th street saxophone quartet, Rich Rothenberg (ts) and Jim Hartog (bs) and also Tom Varner (french horn), Ron Horton (tp), Pete McCann (elg, g, banjo), Bill Moring (b), Rich Rosenzweig (d, orchestra bells). The arrangement is from the Jim Hartog's pen. This is a marvellous and unique reprise of "Tell me when". Jim Hartog played the theme very softly, following by Tom Varner (the French horn sound being so near of the valve trombone one), the trumpet player, the tenor saxophonist took nice soli.
On this CD you also find an excellent suite based on the "Once Upon a Time in the West" music.
You can also find in Hep Records the second East Down Septet CD "Out of Gridlock". Please, search these two records, they are great !!
4. Ygor Mamoushev "While the night is leaving", ROSTOK Records CD 148
Igor Mamoushev is an ukrenian pianist. His play sounds very classic and he offers us nice piano solo interpretations of standards (Misty, Autumn Leaves, Tea For Two, Soul Eyes).
He performs "Line For Lyons" in a medium tempo, he shows a nice control of the swing.
Line for Lyons (3mn50s). This CD was issued in 2001.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
1. GERRY MULLIGAN IN SPAIN 1962-1963
I try to get information about Gerry Mulligan in Spain during the 60s. Very
hard to find !!!
I noted a photography of Gerry Mulligan in the WHISKY JAZZ club of Madrid,
probably dated in 1962-1965 (to be confirmed) on the web page
www.margencero.com/regoli/regoli2.htm
I got more information about the spanish tenor saxophonist Pedro Iturralde
(born 1929). The page
http://utopia.knoware.nl/~jsmeets/cgi-bin/ccd.cgi?comp=iturralde informed us
that Pedro Iturralde played in the "Whisky Jazz Club" with such guest jazz
artists as Don Byas, Lee Konitz and Gerry Mulligan during the beginning of
the 60s
2. NPR JAZZ PROFILES : GERRY MULLIGAN
I received a home made CD about the Jazz Profiles : Gerry
Mulligan, with the information "Recorded in 2002".
In reality this programme was already broadcasted in 1996, April 29 and I
got it in summer 1996. So this is only a new broadcast and not a new
programme. This one includes an interesting Gerry Mulligan' s interview.
3. GERRY MULLIGAN IN MOSCOW USSR
I've found the following information about Gerry Mulligan in USSR in the Gerry Mulligan collection of the Library of Congress .
March 3, 1960 Gerry Mulligan Quintet
MOSCOW, Cafe Molodjoznoye
Gerry Mulligan (as), Vladimir Sermakhashev (ts), Vagif Sadyhov (p), Andrey Yegorev (b), Vladimir Amatuni (d)
A. Lester leaps in
-RGA 2676 of LOC (duration : 001500)
Such a date is very surprising !
Gerry Mulligan was alone and he played alto saxophone. We were able to believe that this was Moscow (Idaho), but the Molodiojnoie cafe is really in Moscow.
Searching on the net, we note that Gerry Mulligan played with I A Shirokov at the Molodiojnoje Cafe in Moscow in 1972 !!! Was this during the Dave Brubeck Quintet tour in October-november 1972 ?
Here the informations collected about Shirokov :
1949 : Igor Anatolievich SHIROKOV was born in Novosibirsk.
1958-62 : Training in trumpet play at Music School in Novosibirsk
1972 : Living in Moscow. Steady gig at the Molodiojnoje Cafe playing with visitors Gerry Mulligan and Charles Lloyd
