15. VIC LEWIS WEST COAST ALL-STARS

With Love To Gerry Sea Breeze Jazz SB 3051

A nice album recorded during April 2000 and recently issued. Produced and leaded by Vic Lewis, This album offers us some new arrangements of";Noblesse" (2 takes),";I heard the Shadows Dancing" from respectively the pen of Gordon Goodwin/Andy Martin and Bill Liston. There other songs are from the CJB songbook,";Go Home" and";I'm gonna go Fishing" arranged by Bill Holman,";Walking Shoes" by Manny Albam,";Bwebidda Bobbida by Bob Brookmeyer.

The last song of this album is a beautiful Christian Jacob piano solo :";Ballade".
The members of this sextet are Andy Martin, Bob Mc Chesney (tb), Bob Summers (tp), Christian Jacob (p), Trey Henry (b), Ray Brinker (d)
The first version of";Noblesse" is entirely by Andy Martin who multi-tracked all five trombone parts in a wonderful score by Gordon Goodwin. The quality of the arrangements gives at this sextet the powerful of a little big band. The CJB is really present. The second version of";Noblesse" starts by Trey Henry's bass playing marvellously the theme.

EARLY CJB DAYS

The band has debuted";in the east" the previous week end at the Red Hill Inn, in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Down Beat reported that subsequent personnel changes brought Zoot Sims (ts), Gene Quill (as), Bob Brookmeyer (vtb), Conte Candoli (tp), and Mel Lewis into the band.

From the notes of the CD";Vic Lewis West Coast All-stars", Vic Lewis wrote :";One of my greatest memories was when he sent Judy Holiday in her car to pick me up and take me to Basin Street East for the premiere performance of the";Concert Jazz Band". To me, this was the epitome of how a big band should play jazz."
