NEW CDs WITH GERRY MULLIGAN

1. Enrico INTRA : Dissonanza - Consonanza

This is a Musica Jazz CD ( ref : 1127) associated with the july issue of the Italian jazz review Musica JAZZ. As many of these CDs, This is a survey of Enrico Intra's career. The take 10 of the CD is an uncomplete version of Nuova Civilta (1st,3rd and 4th movements). The musicians were Giancarlo Barigozzi (fl,sop), Gerry Mulligan (bs), Enrico Intra (p), Sergio Farina (g), Pino Presti (elb), Tullio Di Piscopo (d).

2. COOL JAZZ : New York 1947-1949

A 2CD box called "Cool Jazz : New York 1947-1949" is just issued by the french label "FREMEAUX & ASSOCIES" (ref: no.179). This compiltation realised by Alain Tercinet is excellent.

Two nice photographies of Gerry Mulligan and some takes from the BIRTH OF THE COOL sessions and also the works of Gerry of the WINDING-MOORE-WALLINGTON sextet.

3. *THE BEST OF NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL : Vol 2

This album was released in may 1999. "Walking Shoes" is interpreted by the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. I don't know the date of recording. 1991 or 1994 ? The reference of this album is NSJF CD 380608.

4. GERRY MULLIGAN : The Art of Gerry Mulligan, the final recording

This TELARC (ref CD 83517) compilation covers three albums : Paraiso, Dream a little dream, and Dragonfly.
The marvelous front cover photography was taken by Franca Mulligan.
The selected songs are :
From "Paraiso" : Paraiso, Wave, O Bom Alvinho, North Atlantic Run
From "Dream a little dream" : Dream a little dream, Noblesse, Nobody Else but me, My funny Valentine, Song for Strayhorn
From "Dragonfly" : Dragonfly, Brother Blues, Art of Trumpet, and Oh, Mr. Sauter ? Yes, Mr.Finegan.

5. *JAZZ MAGNET : David X YOUNG's Jazz Loft 1954-1965

This two-CD set and book documents the jam sessions at Young's loft in NYC. The Cds is compiled from private recordings and includes musicians such as Pepper Adams, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Hall, Zoot Sims.

The selected songs are :
CD 1 : It don't mean a thing, Spuds, Dark Cloud, This Can't Be Love, Zoot & drums, Stompin' at the Savoy, Dog Story
CD 2 : There will never be another you, Wildwood, 821 blues, When the sun comes out.
One jam session, recorded in late 1958, featured Gerry Mulligan !
Perhaps we will get more informations about it from this book and CDs !

6. GERRY MULLIGAN QUINTET : If you can't beat 'em, join 'em !

This famous Limelight album (LM 82021) is now available on CD. This Japanese Limelight issue has as reference PHCE-6010.
The quintet composed by Gerry Mulligan (bs),Pete Jolly (p),John Gray (g),Jimmy Bond (b), Hal Blaine (d) recorded this album in july 22-28, 1965 in New York.
Gerry Mulligan selected pop songs from Roger Miller, John Lennon & Paul McCartney. Only one original : If you can't beat 'em, join 'em !

NEW VIDEO WITH GERRY MULLIGAN

1. *JAZZ CASUAL

This video was released the January 2, 2001.
This famous TV program created by Ralph J Gleason was originally broadcasted on the National Education Television Network. It's now available on a black & white video tape (NTSC system) for about 14 US $.
Gerry Mulligan Quartet was composed by Bob Brookmeyer (vtb), Gus Johnson (d) and Wyatt Ruther (b). The themes were : "Four for Three", "Utter Chaos", "Open Country" and the nice "Darn that Dream"
The video description informed that this episode was originally aired july 18, 1962. That is in opposition of our discographical notes which gave December 29, 1963.

This is a USA CD 725, recorded in 1989.

The drummer B Tegler keeps the small-group swing tradition alive. He plays "Apple Core" (3'03).

*BEN WEBSTER : Live, Providence, RI, 1963
The famous tenor saxophonist plays his Mulligan-Webster's song "Go Home" (9'12)
This is a STORYVILLE CD 8237

Bud SHANK : Silver Storm
The Bud Shank sextet performed "Idol Gossip" (5'58). This is a RAW Records 6738430201000.
This album was recorded at the Raws Records Studio at Port Townsend (WA) during the year 2000.

Buddy BANKS : Jazz de Chambre
This very rarely recorded bassist played "Line for Lyons" in October 28, 1954 at the Geneix Studio at Paris. This take covered for the first time this famous Mulligan's theme.
Previously issued on the 10"LP "Club francais du disque no. 33", it is newly issued on GITANE CD serie "JAZZ IN PARIS" under the reference 013034-2
The trio is composed by Buddy Banks (b), Bob Dorough (p), Jimmy Gourley (g). The timing of this "Line for Lyons" is (3'46)

*Benny Waters : When you're smiling
Benny Waters played "Line for Lyons" on this HEP CD 2010 which was released in October 1997

2. Ronnie CUBER's Three Baritone Saxophones Band

played in august 14, 1998 at Brevard (USA). This Quintet featuring Gary Smulyan and Charles Davis as other baritone saxophonists was recorded. I hope to receive next a radio broadcast recording.

INFORMATION FROM THE ZOOT SIM'S DISCOGRAPHY

Zoot sims played with Gerry Mulligan in the Stan Getz orchestra at the Apollo Theatre.
This session was recorded on a wire recorder at extreme distance.

Along his career Zoot Sims played a lot of times "The Red Door", theme composed by Zoot and Gerry.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

1. ZOOT SIMS & HENRI RENAUD : MARCH 15,1956

Previously issued on the 10"LP "Club francais du disque no. 95", it is newly issued as a part of the GITANE CD serie "JAZZ IN PARIS" under the reference 013037-2 under the title : "Zoot Sims & Henri Renaud"

Alain Tercinet says in the booklet : "Even though the musicians were strictly forbidden to perform elsewhere, Mulligan himself had jammed at the "Vieux Colombier" with Claude Luter and William Boucaya (an excellent French baritone saxophonist), and as for Zoot Sims, he seemed to be everywhere at the same time".
Nevertheless the Mulligan's sidemen recorded four tunes this 15th of march 1956. This quintet composed by Jon Eardley, Zoot Sims, Henri Renaud (p), Eddie De Haas (b), Charles Saudrais (d) played two Renaud-Zims originals : "Charles went to Cherbourg", Charles was in Rouen" and also two other songs "Crazy Rhythm", "I've found a new baby".

I received an article about the Viarregio Festival (July 19-21, 1976).
The exact location is "Bussola Domani". The article confirms the presence of Dodo Goya, Tullio Di Piscopo and that they played a fast blues "Taurus Moon"
