2. Gerry Mulligan with Paul Desmond
I have compared the two CDs : The old one "RCA CD 90364", the new one "RCA Bluebird 09026 64019 2", and also the LP issue "RCA Victor LPM 2624" "
The timing is only for the music, so it's shorter than the one indicated on the CDs or LP.
CD ISSUES
PRESENTATION
In 1957 Gerry Mulligan recorded an album of the Norman GRANZ series : GERRY MULLIGAN MEETS. Paul Desmond was one of the guests . This new recording was the friendly collaboration with Paul Desmond and it was issued by RCA.
Until this last CD, the various LP, CD issues of the album "Two of a mind" contained 6 tracks (on LP three on each face). They were recorded during various studio sessions between June and August 1962, the rhythm section changing at each of this session.
The 2003 CD issue adds 5 new bonus tracks including alternate takes and new songs.
ORIGINAL TRACKS
I've compared the timing of these original tracks. I noted that 3 songs have different timings:
- Two of a mind (5mn43s) / (5mn54s) ; the final is longer on the recent Bluebird CD. Nevertheless the two takes have their sounds down slowly at the end
- Blight of the Fumble Bee (6mn31s) / (6mn56s); The "Bumble Bee" part is longer on the second CD
- Out of Nowhere (6mn40s) / (6mn23s); On this new CD a final part is omitted. This part is introduced by the drummer and the bassist and then came the baritone and the alto saxophonist. On the first CD the sound fades out slowly.
The 3 other songs are strictly the same in these 2 issues. They are :
- All the Things You Are (5mn47s)
- Stardust (8mn18s)
- The Way you look to night (7mn18s)
The timings of the 6 songs on "RCA CD 90364" are the same than the ones on my LP issue.
In the booklet the producer Ben Young indicates that many of these songs are assemblies of various tracks. His note is very interesting and he gives us his new discographical information about these sessions.
BONUS TRACKS
For the first time we hear the Paul Desmond - Gerry Mulligan Quintet. The guitarist Jim Hall was present during the Webster Hall session in June 8, 1962. The quintet recorded an "Untitled Blues Waltz".
The combo who played the first track was Paul Desmond (as), Gerry Mulligan (bs), Jim Hall (g), John Beal (b), Ed Shaughnessy (d)
N2PW 1666-3 Untitled Blues Waltz (9mn51s)
On the second track , the booklet gives as musicians, Paul De[s]mond (bs), Gerry Mulligan (p) and Jim Hall (g), John Beal (b), Ed Shaughnessy (d)
E. N2PW 1666-unslated Untitled Blues Waltz (1mn38s)
From the June 26, 1962 session the quartet played a Paul Desmond favorite : Easy Living.
N2PW 1667-5 Easy living (7mn11s)
From the July 3, 1962, this CD gives an alternate take of "All the things you are"
N2PW 1665-2 All the things you are (7mn24s)
Finally a new take of "The Way You Look Tonight" from a different session (August 13 / June 26)
N2PW 1668-C The way you look to night (7mn24s)
AN OTHER ALTERNATE TAKE NOT PRESENT ON THE CD:
All the things you Are - In the 3 LP box "From West Coast to East Coast" (RCA 45694), there is found an alternate take of "All the Things You Are". The timing is very different: 3 mn45s

3. Gerry Mulligan meets Johnny Hodges
November, 1959 :
VERVE Records 065 513-2At last the Mulligan - Hodges meeting is issued on CD in the serie[s] LPR. This is exactly the music of the original LP MGV S-68367.
The quintet is composed of Gerry Mulligan (bs), Johnny Hodges (as), Claude Williamson (p), Buddy Clark (b), Mel Lewis (d).
The repertoire is shared in 3 Mulligan songs : Bunny, What's the Rush, 18 Carrots for Rabbit and 3 Hodges' ones : Back Beat, What It's All About and Shady Side
If the other "Gerry Mulligan meets" album are rich of exchange between the two wind players. This one is very different. A lot of the themes are played at unison. The association of these two particular and unique sound[s] is really a great moment. Nevertheless Paul Desmond, Stan Getz and Ben Webster had also their own sounds! After the theme, each player takes a chorus only with the rhythm section.
Gerry Mulligan played counter-point only during the bridge of two Johnny Hodges themes : "Back Beat" and "Shady Side".
My three highlights of this album are :
The marvellous ballad "What's the rush" (played without Gerry Mulligan) is an incredible theme for the famous Hodges lyricism.
The fine "18 Carrots for Rabbit". You can hear a nice Mulligan solo and also great 4 bar exchanges between as/bs/d.
Finally the infectiously autumnal "Shady Side" (as said by Nat Hentoff in the original comment of the back side). Nat Hentoff describes this unique atmosphere as marvellous.
In comparison with the "Two of a Mind" album, the Johnny Hodges album is full of interaction and exchange. The two wind players show real joy in the solos of their friend. All along this album you have a fresh, lively music.
4. Gerry Mulligan Soundtrack : LA MENACE 1977 (Alain Corneau)

The CBC Records - Perpective CD 2026-5 entitled "Ovation Vol 1" is a 5 CDs box . This box contains recordings of 5 great Canadian composers, Jean Coulthard, Jacques Héru, John Weinzweig, Murray Adaskin and Harry Freedman.

This recordings were made in Winnipeg (Canada). Conducted by Simon Streatfeild , the CBC Winnipeg Orchestra and Gerry Mulligan played a wonderful interpretation of "Celebration"
6. Gerry Mulligan Quartet at Leverkusen October 24, 1991 :
Dave Brubeck Quintet at Berlin November 4, 1972 : JAZZ FOR FUN, broadcast, may 3, 2003
Previously based on two Dave Brubeck recordings made in Berlin either in 1966 with Paul Desmond as saxophonist or in 1972 with his trio featuring Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond; this new JAZZ FOR FUN broadcasted by 3 SAT in Deutchland, the Saturday may3, 2003, adds 4 songs from the Leverkusen concert by the Gerry Mulligan Quartet.
The songs from 1972 are : All the Things You Are, Take the A Train
The songs from 1991 : Line for Lyons, Rico Apollo, My Funny Valentine, Maytag
have recently issued a Dave Brubeck Quartet, recorded at Storyville under the Paul Desmond name !!
OTHER MUSICIANS PLAY GERRY MULLIGAN :
1. Guy Schadeck Quintet
Jazz Art Festival at Stadtbredimus (Luxemburg) June 14, 2003.
Stadtbredimus is a big village in the Moselle vineyards (at 30 km in the south-east of Luxemburg City). Organized by the Rotary Club of Esch-Alzette, this one night festival presented two performances.
The first set was dedicated at Michel Reis Trio (Marc Demuth (b), Olivier Strauch (d). This was an excellent trio of young musicians !
At 22.00 pm, the second set was a Tribute Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, the Guy Schadeck Quintet was composed {by} [of] Edouardo Romano (tp), Pierre Boespflug (p), Jean Luc Deat (b), Charlie Davot (d). For about three years this group has played regularly the Gerry Mulligan music.
The selection for this concert were :
Line for Lyons (11mn11s), Love me or Leave me (9mn13s), Limelight (9mn32s), My funny Valentine (12mn57s), It's Sandy at the Beach (8mn36s), Walking Shoes (7mn33s)
I was amazed by the E Romano's performance. His sound during "My Funny Valentine" was great, his inventiveness in "Walking Shoes" was really appreciated. I loved too the solos of the pianist Pierre Boespflug. Guy Schadeck thrilled us with his powerful sound, a great presence !
This quintet (with another bassist) played the June 6, 2003 at Ettelbruk (Luxemburg)
