OCTOBER 1999

1. Mel Torme: Collection 1944-1985

Torme had written a clever lyric to Gerry Mulligan's "Walking Shoes" and first recorded it in 1956 with Ted Heath's orchestra. The Atlantic versions, with Rogers , has never been issued till.

There are hardly the last times Tormé would sing an Ellington or a Gershwin song , he's done all Ellington concerts on many occasions (most notably at Carnegie , at which he performed "Reminiscing in Tempo" with Gerry Mulligan reprising Harry Carney's role)and an all-Gershwin show would be a foregone conclusion.

2. Bruni's Old Town Gallery

This artist painted a beautiful portrait of Gerry Mulligan called "Profile Blowing Expressionist".

The size of this portrait is 30" x 40"

You can see it in the web page : www.brunijazzart.com . To contact him : bruni@brunijazzart.com .

Laura (3'54) - Frenesi (3'43) - Rustic Hop (4'38) - Lullaby of the leaves (4'02) - Bweebida Bobbida (4'49)

I already had a large part of this concert under the reference "USA, 1957". Nevertheless this recording has two news songs for my collection : "Motel", "Utter Chaos".

The first "Utter Chaos" (4'35) and "My funny Valentine" were previously issued on LP by Verve.

2. Gerry Mulligan Quartet, April 1954, Boston , Storyville Club

On audio tape C1050

Gerry Mulligan (bs), Bob Brookmeyer (vtb), Bill Anthony (b), Franck Isola (d)

Utter Chaos (15s) - Bernie's Tune (4'10) - Lullaby of the leaves (3'27) - Makin' Whoopee (3'10) - My funny Valentine (2'42) - Turnstile (2'33)

This recording is rare for two reasons :

1) Recorded before the famous Pleyel concerts in june 1954. It becomes the first Mulligan - Brookmeyer recorded concert !

2) The presence of Bill Anthony

JULY 2000

1. Dionne Warwick TV Show, 1976

On audio tape C1054

Gerry Mulligan participated at this excellent "History of Jazz" organized by Dionne Warwick.

Collective personnel: Dizzy Gillespie tp; Stan Getz ts; Gerry Mulligan bars; Lionel Hampton vib; Herbie Hancock elp; Sir Roland Hanna p; Max Roach dr; Dionnne Warwick, Joe Williams vo; and Count Basie & His Orchestra.

2. Swedish Mulligan interviews

A radio program on Gerry Mulligan by Claes Dahlgren, including excerpts from various interviews with Mulligan conducted by Dahlgren.

The first excerpt lasts 53s, it is composed of one question and one answer in English.

The second one lasts 36s , also in English.

The last part is based of interventions in Swedish and extracts of Gerry Mulligan's interviews in English. The timing of this part is 2mn46s.

This is one of the last interviews of Gerry Mulligan. This interview is unhappily covers by the german traduction.

4. Hollywood Swings & Jazz :

Hot numbers from classic M-G-M, Warner Bros, and RKO Fims - RHINO CD R2 79805

A very nice 2 CDs set with on CD N2 many tracks from the movie "The Subterraneans".

I had an LP covering the soundtrack of this film, I notice some differences.

"Improvisation" is called "Guido's Blackhawk" on the LP.

The source #1 is the same than the LP. Timing : 3'04

The source #2 has a timing of 3'21

"Red Drum Blues" is a new song.

It features Gerry Mulligan (bs), Art Farmer (tp) and as rhythm section, André Previn (p), Red Mitchell (b), Shelly Manne (d). Timing : 4'27

"Coffee Time" is the same than the LP. The famous Carmen McRae is the soloist.

"Spaghetti Fantasy" is a new song. Timing : 2'30

Gerry Mulligan played with the rhythm section only. The informations (a large combo) given by the booklet are wrong.

Gerry Mulligan is the unique soloist. His play is beautiful for this ballad.

"Alarm Clock" is called "Raising Caen" on the LP. Timing : 3'06.

"Should I ?" is the same than the LP. Timing : 2'29.

"Things are looking Down" is longer than the LP. This CD take includes the solo of Bill Perkins. Timing : 7'23

"Bread & Wine" is the same than the LP. Timing : 4'14.

From the PLAYBOY Jazz poll in 1964, the panellists were : Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Ralph J. Gleason, Stan Kenton, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, George Russell, Gunther Schuller.

This a long and interesting confrontation between the panelists (30 pages) available on :

6. A Thousand Clown

The Fred Coe's movie is now available as MGM product

The participation at this movie is only based on the Gerry Mulligan - Judy Holiday 's original "A thousand Clowns"which is sung by Rita Gardner as opening theme. The timing of this opening theme is only 20s !

AUGUST 2000

1. "Run For Your Life" : A TV movie starring Ben Gazzara

"Pete Rugolo and Oliver Nelson did a lot of TV work, so the 60s TV had the "West Coast" Jazz Sound. "Run for your life", starring Ben Gazzara, often featured jazz musicians on the show as themselves, working in smoky nightclubs."

"Here's a partial list of these jazz musicians, Joe Williams, Stan Kenton and June, .......Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan.......and all the cats at "Love's Lounge" on Greenwood, in Tulsa".

ALL HELP IN LOCATING THIS IS VERY WELCOME!

2. Gerry Mulligan Quartet: Sweden 1962

The exact date of the Stockholm concert in 1962 is 11 october, according to Swedish Jazz magazine Orkester Journalen (november 1962).

SEPTEMBER 2000

1. John Williams

Those of you who get Jazz Journal International may want to reread the review of the above cited CD.... A splendid issue...John Williams lined up 4 baris ( and a superb rhythm section) for two different sessions...The first is especially felicitous, as the baris also double on flute, bass clarinet, soprano sax, tenor & alto sax and alto clarinet... The opener is Walkin' Shoes...the ensemble does a take (a la Supersax) of Chet's 1952 solo, and also closes it out with Jeru's impro of the same date...

The group pays tribute to Cecil Payne, Bob Gordon, Pepper Adams, Joe Temperley (alas, nothing for Chaloff)

The exemplary liner notes are by the poet laureate of UK jazz writers, Alun Morgan..

The issue is SPOTLITE 564......probably only available, for the time being, through an English dealer

2. Dave Brubeck 's Telarc Album called :
