LINER NOTES |
| Looking back through my father's files, at the articles he wrote about Gerry Mulligan, I can say he must have had a great deal of respect for Mulligan, as he virtually never had anything bad to say about him or his group in his columns. Oh sure, a lukewarm album review, once in a while. But by and large, he seemed to enjoy almost everything Mulligan did. Small groups, big band...it didn't seem to amtter. It's no wonder he wanted Mulligan as a guest on his Jazz Casual series. On this episode, Mulligan performs with the fabulous Bob Brookmeyer (a very nice man who I spoke to while clearing the series for this video release) on trombone; Gus Johnson on bass; Wyatt Ruther on drums and Mulligan on baritone sax and piano (a relative rarity, as Mulligan made a point, in 1962, of both performing and recording without piano). On this session, they play Mulligan's compositions "Four For Three" and "Utter Chaos," and Brookmeyer's "Open Country", along with Mulligan's arrangement of "Darn That Dream" (DeLange/Van Huesen). - Tony Gleason |
